The forces of Mother Nature cannot be avoided – many of the outdoor sections of our homes will face a battering of the elements over time and therefore may require regular maintenance. If you’re a home owner with a wooden fence surrounding your property, you will understand the important of maintenance in order to prevent the wood from cracking, warping or cupping over the years. Here are some of our tips on the best up-keep for fencing for homes…
Caring for your wooden fence
Wooden fences need to be cleaned, sealed or stained on a semi-regular basis to keep them protected from harsh elements such as the baking sun and its harmful UV rays, pelting rain or strong winds. These simple steps will help to keep most wooden fencing for homes in tip-top shape:
- Get cleaning
Start by thoroughly cleaning your wooden fence with specially formulated wood cleaner, following the manufacturer’s directions. This wood cleaner can be found at most hardwares or building stores. Allow the cleaner to settle onto the wood for 15 -20 minutes, then rinse!
- Rinse thoroughly
The wooden fence now needs to be scrubbed and rinsed of the cleaner with either a long-handled scrub brush, or better than that, rinsed with a high pressure washer. Avoid damaging your fence by ensuring your high pressure washer is kept at least 30 centimetres away from the wood, by choosing a wide angle tip for the washer and not using too much harsh pressure.
- Stain and seal
Once your fence is gleaming and free from all dirt, algae, mold and lichens, it’s important to stain or seal your fence to help protect it from the sun and weather to come. An oil stain is the best option in order to penetrate the wood efficiently. Oil stains can be found at most hardwares or building stores and will generally protect your fence for years to come.
